Brighton Pride 2014

Various dates in July and August 2014

A Brighton Pride is not just for Christmas; it is for life! Or rather, a Brighton Pride is not just about the parade; it’s about a lot of things really. Brighton Pride involves a variety of events that culminate in the Pride parade – events that you may not be aware of.

You may be asking why Pride matters so much? Well, for lots of reasons really. Pride provides people with an opportunity to celebrate what makes us the same and what makes us different. It publicises issues being experienced by the LGBT community, for example homophobic and violent attacks on young people, adults and the elderly within the LGBT community. It reduces stigmas, prejudice and discrimination. And lastly, it is great for Brighton as extra funds generated by Pride goes back into the local community! If this sounds like something you want to be a part of, then check out our below list of Brighton Pride events!

Pride Arts and Film Festival – 19/07/2014 – 04/08/2014 – After a successful first last year,  this festival will be re-visiting Pride this year with its ‘Icons Exhibition’ at the Jubilee Library featuring works from established LGBT artists and photographers, as well as a schedule of LGBT interest films taking place at the Duke of York’s Picture House and Dukes @ Komedia! For more info on the arts festival schedule, click here.

Doggy Pride – 20/07/2014 – Working in collaboration with Dogs Trust Shoreham, this event celebrates our four legged chums with a day of fun! The event will feature competitions in which the judges – Coastway Veterinary Group – will oversee and judge pooches on such categories as ‘The owner the judge would most like to take home’! Okay, so that one’s mostly for the dog’s human companion than the dog… The event will take place at Hove RFC (Shirley Drive, Hove) from noon to 5pm. To take part in the Tweeting and Instagramming shenanigans happening in the run up to this event, be sure to let everyone know why your dog makes you proud and include #doggypride For more info on this event, click here.

Disco 5K Rainbow Run – 27/07/2014 – This 5K will take place in Preston park and is your chance to make like Olivia Newton-John and ‘get physical’. Registration for this event is £18.50 which includes a donation to Rainbow fund and Pride, and in exchange for your fee, you get some funky free accessories including a feather boa, clip on moustache, leg warmers and disco specs. This event puts the F in fun. I mean, how many 5K events can you think of that gives you a feather boa as part of your entry fee. Most 5Ks we know of usually give a t-shirt and maybe some energy bars! To enter, and for more information, go to:
Pride Parade – 02/08/2014 – Yes, this is the event you have all been waiting for. The grand finale of the Pride Summer festivities! This year’s parade is themed ‘The World’s a Disco’ and will celebrate music and dance from across the globe. The parade begins by Brighton Wheel on Madeira Drive, but that’s not all that is happening! There will be performances in Preston Park as well as lots of vendors for you to visit there – you can find out more about this, including the line-up here. And there will also be a Pride Village Party starting at 4pm after the Preston Park festival and ending on the Sunday – wristbands for this which will allow you to buy alcohol from participating vendors can be purchased from a number of outlets as well as the Pride site.

Have fun at Pride!
